See Six secrets uncovered by Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia investigation on www.aljazeera.com
So I’ve watched the documentary and my thoughts are that it’s either bad or it’s very bad for the current government and even the nation’s reputation.
At best, they were trying to fix a real problem which is the lack of cash in the country. Not saying it’s ethical but it’s understandable why you’d greenlight such an operation to recruit civilians to trade gold on the government’s behalf. Problem is that they were a bit too blinded by money to do their due diligence, allowing for a lot of people to take advantage of this lapse in judgement whether friends or strangers you’d never meet.
At worst (and I hope it isn’t so) is that this is a criminal enterprise run (or willingly supported) by the nations leaders at the expense of the nations wealth and reputation. We’re missing out of so much revenue that could be used to pay healthcare workers (instead of arresting them for protesting) and restore a collapsed public healthcare system, invest in infrastructure (particularly electricity) to promote economic development as well as alleviating the grave poverty many people find themselves in. But I get why you really need another 50K watch
Either way, it doesn’t look good on the government and it undermines our confidence as a country. Might even give us even worse sanctions. It’s a shame that it’s election year and all these problems (inflation, currency collapse, energy, health, crime, returning refugees and gold mafia) are happening right now. In 2018, the leaders were elected to handle these problems and it doesn’t look like they’re doing a good job at doing so. Not saying that I can do any better, but if you insist on wanting people to vote for you because you’ll solve their problems, you better solve their problems.
It’s possible that these are all lies. If that’s the case, clear your name and show that such criminality won’t be tolerated. Maybe ZACC could actually do it’s job of investing corruption to a high degree of certainty rather than being a fancy catch-and-release system. There’s a chance to do the right thing here. Not sure it can be done in 3 months, or it’ll actually help, but this isn’t something you can wish would go away.
