In it’s never-ending quest to kill any goodwill it once has, YouTube killed community caption contributions because it was too hard and hardly used. Smarter people, like Rikki Poynter, have gone into why removing community contributions is a bad idea is you want to know why that is.

Amara.org is a tool which came up as a way to provide community contributions to YouTube. One thing I can’t get over is that this is like asking for free work. The person who suggested this makes $10k a month on Patreon which rubs me the wrong way since they can clearly afford it. PhilosophyTube, who earns at least that much was similarly annoyed but after some callouts, he decided to pay for captions in certain languages.

At the same time, I doubt it’s economical to add captions for more than three languages, especially small ones. Fans who might otherwise not be able to contribute cash may support through translations. Heck, I’ve provided community contributions, some of them in my native language Shona.

Still, I’m sure having this tool is more of a benefit to ensuring a more accessible internet as a whole.
