Using Apple’s Tools to Fix My iPhone [VIDEO 31:24]

In this video, Quinn tries to fix his iPhone using Apple’s self repair kit. It’s such a bizarre process, with the shady ass website, thousand dollar deposit for 40kg of equipment and calling Apple in order to allow newly installed parts to be used all to save a few dollars after returning the old parts. It’s a lot of work compared to what iFixit does [VIDEO 5:56] which needs a $50 kit.

Honestly, it’s seems like Apple’s going like “how’s this for your fucking right to repair” since the process is really complicated. At the same time, this process is exactly what Apple workers do to repair your device. I’m sure the machines are needed in order to get the phone as close to factory condition as possible. Was going to complain about how complex this process is, but it should have better water resistance and protection than the iFixit method. Plus, you can verify the parts so the iPhone doesn’t bitch about it.

On the one hand, it’s fine for Apple to tell you that you got a non-original part installed. The annoying bit is that they turn off all the useful features like True Tone and Battery Health.

In all, it’s an interesting program which provides Apple service level equipment. The bigger issue are their other devices which are nightmares to repair such that they just replace it. I really hope the engineers who make these products consider how to make their product more repairable going forward. I still need to look into how the right to repair community feel about this.
