What’s Wrong With This Blog?

This blog started in September last year as a way to talk about stuff I cared about since people IRL don’t care about my interests. Because of that, I’ve amassed a great following on the internet within two months.

Well… not quite.

Oh and btw, most of those views are by me :(. About 20 of my followers came from a question on Quora to get feedback. So, let’s see how I’m doing.

What I’m doing right

Right Thing #1: This Blog Exists

It’s better than staying in indecision and putting it off until I was “ready”- whenever that would be. While the posts suck, they exist and I’m learning a lot from it through all the experimentation.

Right Thing #2: This Site Is Clean

Besides the ads, because I’m cheap, the site looks clean thanks to the Sequential WordPress Theme. With how clean the website is, (the nonexistent) readers can focus on content. It’s not the best-looking website nor the most navigable, but clean.

Right Thing #3: My Blog Is Somewhat Diversified

I don’t just write blog posts here. I’ve also hosted a live stream to make a Chrome Extention- the first of many I hope¹. Plus, I have another blog, Semester of Java² where I share what I’m learning in my Java class.

Right Thing #4: I Publish Blog Posts Weekly³

While the blog posts aren’t great, I force myself to write one each week, providing you with consistency and giving me the motivation to get better.

That wasn’t too bad. There are more positive points now that I think of it. I guess I was just too hard on my self. With that, time to roast my blog.

Things I Suck At

Sucky Thing #1: The Writing Sucks

It’s just dreadful. It’s incoherent. It’s verbose. It’s poorly edited. It’s a perfect example of what not to write.

Fortunately, I’m working at it by doing things that force me to write more, like my classes, new part-time job, and this blog.

Sucky Thing #2: I’ve deviated from the blogs original purpose.

From the website’s about page,

AGCKB is a blog discussing things programming and computer science related. Every week, a post about programming, personal projects, computer science theory, and hackathons will be posted here.

Sounds neat, but I haven’t blogged any computer science stuff yet. I might as well leave out the computer science part of the about page if I’m not going to talk about it⁴.

Sucky Thing #4: No SEO, Custom Domain, Self Hosted WordPress, etc.

While this is a small side project of mine, it would be nice if more people got to know about it. I don’t have a nice landing page nor an archives page, making it hard for new visitors to understand what I’m about.

Since I’m focused on the quality of my writing, becoming more professional will have to wait.

Sucky Thing #5: Nobody Knows I Exist

Did you notice the embarrassingly low view count in the image earlier on in the article? That’s not good. It feels like every post I make gets published into thin air. Then again, I have nothing worth sharing so it’s probably better that I stay obscure.

What I Can Do To Fix It?

Instead of being salty at the sorry state of the blog, I could implement some suggestions, such as

• fixing the landing page so that visitors know what I do as well as where to start reading,
• organize my posts and add an archive,
• learning how to write by reading good writing resources like the Tech Writing Guide by Douzuki and Purdue’s Grammar Guide,
• writing content worth sharing and
• posting consistently.

So there you have it! Some self-reflection on the two months I’ve been blogging. So while I’m great this blog exists, I still have a lot of work to do to make it better.
