Plaid Gave Me $36

Published:

A few months ago I was looking through my spam filter the other day and I noticed an email from a Plaid class action lawsuit saying that I was entitled to a settlement. Plaid is a service which lets applications interact with user’s banks to do things like track transactions. Banks don’t make this easy so Plaid resorted to screen scraping where they make you log into your bank and save your passwords. If this sounds fishy, that’s because it is—hence the lawsuit. It’s basically training users to get phished.

Thankfully, I haven’t lost any money because of this, but I think I used Plaid because of Intuit Mint and Privacy.com. I filled in the settlement form months ago and I just received my settlement for $35.97:

A paypal transaction from from plaid inc settlement administrator for $35.97 on the 17th of November 2022

While that’s not a lot of money given that they practically pfished me, $36 is a lot of money for me right now. In fact, I just bought some stuff for $36 so it’s just as if Plaid paid for it. Still, it was really suspect how the settlement email went straight to the spam filter.
