A great video which looks at the implications of housing crisis gripping so many countries. It affects everything from publich health and the economy through to the climate and poverty. It’s amazing how we just accept that housing should be expensive and appreciating despite the effort you put into your community. Also, the fact that cities should be static unchanging places even as many people need a place to stay.
Recently, I’ve been adopting an abundance mindset to societal problems like housing. Rather than bitch about how there is already enough housing1 or that we should slow down for some malmalthusian end, I’m open to the idea of more housing. I don’t thing it’s a good thing where most of the fruits of your labor go towards landlords. Think of all the innovation and culture lost because people can’t afford to live anywhere.
In short, some of my policy proposals include telling NIMBYs to eat shit, putting homeless people in proper housing with services nearby, building a lot of housing and implementing a land tax to reward productivity rather than scoping up land and expecting appreciation for doing nothing.
There are many things to this, but the big thing you’ll hear is how there are “X homeless people and Y houses” where Y > X and we should just expropriate houses and put homeless people in them. Sounds based at first but there are many problems. Most countries require compensation for eminent domain for one, the housing might not be suitable and it amounts to forced relocation where people lose their community. ↩︎
