Why Doesn’t Zimbabwe Give Georgism a Go?

Zimbabwe is a mess. Whenever it makes international headlines, it’s usually for all the wrong reasons like energy crisis, land seizures leading to hyperinflation1, regular old inflation and so on.

The Zimbabwean government levies a lot of taxes. Import tarrifs, mineral surrenders, VAT, excise taxes, business taxes, financial transaction taxes, corporate taxes, personal taxes. I understand that running a country is expensive, especially with no lines of credit

What if we tried Georgism?

Yes, I’ve become one of those “a land tax would fix this” people because it makes a lot of sense. Instead of taxing the fruits of our efforts which can discourage better work2.

We need land to live. Unfortunatley, we’ve decided

Nkomo proposed that instead of taking land, why not tax it and redistribute the rent

What about farmers?

The land farmers use isn’t very valuable, so it wouldn’t cost much.
