I was on holiday and it turned out that bastard Putin decided to invade Ukraine. This article came along and it’s worth a read. I knew that Eastern Europe was a hub for tech talent but I didn’t know it was this much.

I’m impressed at how much support the workers are getting and I do hope that it continues into other conflicts instead. Not to take away from the struggle occurring in Ukraine but last year had record coups and incursions but such a unified responded didn’t happen in those places.

As for the sanctions, I wish that they just targeted oligarchs because having all these companies impose their own sanctions that harm regular citizens might backfire. I doubt many Russians asked for this so it’s unfair that they’re being punished for Putin’s actions.

The talent drain seems like a big issue though and if this goes on for too long, I doubt they’ll recover from it. Ukrainians also have a slightly easier time getting into Europe. Again, not that refugees have a good time, but this friendliness doesn’t happen to other countries’ refugees.

In all, I appreciate how much these tech companies stick up for their workers. I just hope that such support will be provided for other conflicts instead of one in the “civilized world”. I’m worried that the stiff sanctions will backfire as they target regular citizens rather than the oligarchs since they didn’t ask for this. Still, I just hope this ends quickly because the longer it goes the uglier it can get.
