See Why I Quit YouTube [VIDEO 1:25:21] on www.youtube.com/@danhowell
A long video where Dan explains why he left YouTube for years. It’s the standard YouTuber burnout story where one starts out enamored but the YouTuber Life, complaining about The Algorithm™️, demonetization, audience expectations, YouTube’s expectations and having a unique yet demonized job with no set schedule leading to unhealthy practices. Thing is, he presents it very well so while it’s nothing new, it’s worth watching.
The most interesting part I thought was how he really wanted to relive his passion by making a TV show for YouTube Red called Dan is Not Okay based on his life had he continued being a lawyer. In spite of all his effort, YouTube seemed unresponsive, taking months to respond even as Dan changed plans specifically for the show, eventually cancelling it because of shifting priorities. My description doesn’t do it justice because of how gut wrenching the whole process is. Not defending YouTube here, but that’s how TV development usually ends up. Shifting priorities, delayed responses, silent cancellations and the lot is how the TV sausage is made. Charlie Brooker has a good bit on this [VIDEO 4:09].
