I’m declaring defeat. Infinite scroll has won.
There is an endless supply of interesting things to consume online, and there are teams and teams of very smart people working very hard to get me to keep watching. One more video means one more metric counter incrementing,
Honestly, I’m in the same space and I estimate that I’ve lost a decade to the pit of social media. Part of it is me constantly craving stimulation and the other part is that these apps have been designed to be addictive. Everyday I’m like, “just 5 minutes” and before you know it the day is gone.
And it seems really hard to defeat. I watched a video where a guy tried micro journaling instead [13:58] and a year after he figured out the habit, he got consumed by social media again. Not sure what we can do about it since scrolling is easier can fruitful use.
Not that everything has to be fruitful, but even downtime is horrible in social media. Reminds me of some hacker news thread where someone wanted the internet to be a beautiful forest instead of the dimly lit casino it currently is.
Asides from that is a note on how mobile sites are getting worse to push people to the app, which is probably for the best as it makes it harder to use.
